LMI is seeking a skilled Policy Advisor/Strategic Communicator to join the Management Advisory Services service line in providing senior leadership support to a DoD organization. As a policy advisor/strategic communicator you will play a critical role in shaping the policy implementation of this organization’s strategy. You will work closely with senior management, subject-matter experts, and policy teams to develop products that effectively capture the organization’s strategy and objectives to internal and external stakeholders. The work will be performed at a Department of Defense (DoD) client site in the Pentagon (Arlington, VA).
Responsibilities
As a Policy Advisor/Strategic Communicator, you will serve the government client by supporting a team developing requirements for this organization. This may include the following activities:
- Collaborate with senior leaders and subject-matter experts to understand key policy priorities, narratives, and objectives
- Serve as client’s go-to advisor on daily operations, managing tasks, and ensuring alignment with organization’s goals and strategic objectives
- Coordinate responses to queries and taskers with department counterparts and international partners
- Engage regularly with international partners on key areas of defense cooperation regarding Ukraine current operations
- Assist senior leadership in the preparation of high-level briefings, meetings, and major international engagements
- Monitor progress on organization’s key efforts on a regular basis and incorporate these updates into policy products briefed to executive-level officials and international leaders
- Serve as focal point for policy products briefed to senior audiences
- Research and gather relevant information, data, and insights to inform policy writing
- Develop clear and concise talking points tailored to specific audiences and occasions
- Ensure talking points are consistent with senior leadership priorities and style
- Stay informed about trends, emerging issues, and geopolitical developments relevant to portfolio
- Collaborate with department stakeholders to coordinate the delivery of talking points and other policy deliverables
- Participate in department-wide, interagency, and international meetings on defense cooperation and collaboration
- Provide deliverables and taskers in support of high-level, international senior leadership engagements
- Take general guidance on intent, target audience, and venue to build draft products with significant technical content for briefings or papers that effectively deliver the desired message and remain consistent with the organization’s objectives and priorities
- Effectively understand and communicate the overall organization strategy and connecting technical activities to the broader strategic context
- Demonstrate a strong grasp of the larger science, technology, acquisition, and sustainment efforts in the Department, understand the organizational elements across the enterprise, and have the ability to liaison and coordinate with the technical communities in each of the Services
- Collaborate with subject-matter experts on researching, writing, and editing strategy and policy papers
- Support client in the planning and logistics of annual defense symposium
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a discipline related to communication, journalism, literature, political science, international relations, history, or equivalent experience
- Prior active duty experience in logistics, maintenance, or public affairs is preferable
- Master’s degree preferable
- Prior policy and strategy writing a plus
- 5+ years of professional experience in national security or defense
- Excellent research skills
- Experience analyzing quantitative and qualitative data
- Experience working with senior leadership in the national security and defense sector
- Strong, demonstrated problem solving experience, communication skills, and writing skills
- Ability to manage multiple groups and tasks, and work independently or in a group
- Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite of tools, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Project, and Visio
- A current SECRET DoD clearance is required
Target salary range: $100,300 - $176,528
