Description
Under broad supervision, conducts inspections and audits of assigned facilities/sites for compliance with applicable health codes in a Public Health District. Reviews and/or prepares applications, permits and technical reports. Investigates and responds to complaints of potential health hazards and requests for service. Owns assigned tasks. May also serve in a lead role.
All District 4 Public Health, County BOH employees are deemed essential employees in the event of an emergency. As such, you may be called on to participate in an event not limited to but including, staffing a shelter, a Specimen Point of Collection Site (SPOC) and/or Point of Distribution site (POD). When you are called on to participate, you are expected and it will be a part of your job requirement to participate, whether the emergency occurs during or outside regular work hours.
Job Responsibilities
- Interprets regulatory issues, technical issues, and analytical data to document compliance
- Investigates complaints, provides environmental education and technical assistance
- Performs inspections, interviews, technical reviews and recommends enforcement actions as needed
- Plans and conducts facility audits and inspections
- Prepares sampling plan and collects samples in accordance with established procedures
- Provides information to the public, regulated community, and enforcement officers regarding the environmental laws and regulations
- Responds to environmental emergencies and conducts safety evaluations
- Reviews permit applications; drafts, modifies and issues permits in accordance with the rules, regulations, and established procedures
- Reviews permit requirements and regulations in order to ensure compliance with state and federal environmental laws
Minimum Qualifications
Environmental Health Specialist 3 - (Annual salary - $51,811.56)
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university which included the completion of 27 semester hours or 40 quarter hours in laboratory sciences (e.g., chemistry, biology, geology, physics, etc.) AND One year of experience at the lower-level PH Environmental Health Specialist 2 (RCP121) OR position equivalent
Additional Information
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bilingual (Spanish/English Speaking)
- Environmental Health Specialist experience in Public Health
- Food Service Standardization and ServSafe Certification
- A passing score on a nationally recognized registration examination for environmental health specialists or sanitarians (such as the examination given by the National Environmental Health Association or the Professional Examination Service)
- Certified in the State Onsite Sewage Program or eligible for certification
- Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) or Registered Sanitarian (RS) by the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA)
- Recognized credentialing of a state or county board having equivalent standards as NEHA
- Currently qualified as a Standardized Retail Food Inspection Officer
