Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of Advising, the Next Steps Advisor will work with a statewide team to implement the Tennessee Coaching Project. They are responsible for monitoring, advising, registering, and coaching a caseload of adult students through their first year of enrollment at the college. They are also responsible for collecting and submitting data for the Project.

Job Duties

• Monitor, coach, and advise an assigned caseload of adult students through their first year of enrollment at the college, either in-person or by email, telephone, Zoom, or other digital or virtual communications.

• Provide registration assistance to students.

• Provide transfer advising to students interested in transferring to a 4-year institution.

• Assist students in the development of academic degree plans to promote retention, persistence to graduation, and degree completion.

• Monitor retention/persistence to graduation for identified caseloads of students and conduct outreach initiatives to facilitate retention/persistence to graduation and degree completion.

• Facilitate referrals of students to resources throughout the institution and the community to promote student success.

• Actively participate in professional development opportunities about advising and success coaching to stay up to date on best practices and research in respective fields, close equity gaps, and increase student success.

• Work with a statewide team to implement the Tennessee Coaching Project, an effort led by the Tennessee Board of Regents. Attend and engage in group professional development opportunities and bi-weekly calls with the leadership team. Communicate and collaborate with other statewide team members.

• In partnership with Northeast State’s Research, Analytics, and Planning Office, collect and submit data for the Tennessee Coaching Project

• Assist in the development and dissemination of academic advisement information for students.

• Cross-train with other Student Success staff, as appropriate, to broaden knowledge/skill base

• Complete other assignments as directed by supervision.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
• Student-facing experience at the secondary or post-secondary level

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in education, social work, or counseling from an accredited institution
• Student-facing experience in academic advising, registration, and/or other student services related to enrollment and retention
• Student-facing experience at a community college
• Experience working with FERPA-protected records and information
• Conversational ability or fluency in a second language

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Technology Skills: MS Office Suite; videoconferencing software; digital records management systems; general operating systems and data information systems
