Reporting into the Medical Value Liaison Field Director, the Senior Medical Value Liaison (MVL)/Executive MVL is a field-based role focused on applying clinical expertise and experience/knowledge of payors, health policy, payer utilization management, and pharmacoeconomics to strategically support Karuna's scientific strategy and business objectives. The MVL works to ensure that payers, PBMs, IDNs, and insurance companies understand the value proposition, clinical differentiators, safety, and efficacy of Karuna's products by presenting relevant formulary information, as well as pharmacoeconomic and clinical data, to support formulary decision making. Collaborating closely with the Medical Team and the Market Access team, the MVL engages in scientific exchange and enters strategic discussions with health care decision makers as they relate to medical/clinical and health economic and outcome research (HEOR) data with payers, policy makers, and other decision makers and influencers.

Responsibilities

Senior Medical Value Liaison
  • Provide comprehensive, accurate, fair, balanced, objective, and scientifically rigorous information and appropriate product and disease state education to health care decision makers in compliance with all policies and procedures
  • Build strategic, long-term relations with customers to be viewed as partners by both internal and external stakeholders
  • Communicate approved clinical information to targeted decision makers (Pharmacy Directors, Medical Directors, Case Managers, Clinical Pharmacists, Formulary Decision Makers and Influencers, etc.) within payer organizations and to managed care professionals to ensure access to effective treatment for people living with psychiatric and neurologic conditions
  • Effectively communicate and appropriately collaborate with the Market Access team to ensure strategic alignment and effective implementation of the clinical strategy for National and Regional Managed Care accounts, covering all books of business (e.g., Commercial, Managed Medicaid, Fee-for-Service, Medicare, PBMs, and Exchange Plans)
  • Respond to unsolicited requests for medical information from health care decision makers and managed care professionals in a timely manner and ensure all scientific exchange and medical/clinical educational needs are met
  • Provide account relationship support to the managed care account management teams by identifying and developing relationships with key decision makers/external experts within managed care organizations and other institutions that purchase or manage the use of Karuna products
  • Provide input and strategic direction to the development of market access -specific customer facing resources
  • Participate in and lead field team activities at relevant managed care conferences
  • Assume a leadership role by taking responsibility as needed for special projects related to Medical and Clinical Affairs activities
Executive Medical Value Liaison (inclusive of above)

Serve as an extension of the field leadership team by serving as the point person for strategic field initiatives. work with the field leadership to determine a tactical plan to achieve a strategic objective and take a lead role in the execution of tactics;
  • Be seen as a subject matter expert on the team in the disease states of interest to Karuna serving as a resource to the team and other internal colleagues,
  • Participate in and contribute to the development of the annual field medical plan,
  • Represent field leadership on committees and during meetings as the need arises.
Required Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in medical/biosciences (i.e., PharmD, MD, PhD.) AND minimum 3 to 5 years related experience (field liaison responsible for market access , worked for managed care organization, corporate or field HEOR, etc.) strongly preferred
  • Current market access/HEOR experience in the therapeutic areas of interest to Karuna preferred
  • The Executive MSL will also have at least 10 years of medical experience with the pharmaceutical industry in the payor space
  • Extensive knowledge of the Medicaid/Medicare environment, payor market commercial insurance, as well as the pharmaceutical corporate environment
  • Proven track record of establishing, maintaining, and enhancing effective and successful peer-to-peer relationships with external experts
  • Broad-based scientific and pharmaceutical knowledge and experience presenting disease and treatment-related information
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as presentation and teaching skills
  • Excellent working knowledge of relevant regulatory and compliance issues related to the MVL role
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, as required, in a fast paced, matrixed, team environment consisting of internal and external team members; ability to influence without direct authority
  • Analytical thinking with excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing priorities and deadlines
  • Excellent planning, organization and time management skills, including the ability to support and prioritize multiple projects
  • Highly accountable for the results and outcomes of their responsibilities and understands the impact of their efforts, results, and attitudes on others
  • Uses teamwork to work cooperatively toward the most effective solutions, championing the best ideas of team members, and assisting where help is needed yet is capable of highly independent work when efficiency is required
  • Results-oriented individual who is highly motivated, decisive, flexible in thought, and has the creativity to excel in and contribute to a rapidly growing company
  • Forward thinking mindset with the ability to manage multiple projects and identify and resolve issues
  • Broad experience in an emerging, publicly traded company environment is a plus
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Ability to travel 50 to 70%
The starting compensation for this job is a range from $150,000 - $220,000, plus incentive cash and stock opportunities (based on eligibility).

The starting pay rate takes into account characteristics of the job, such as required skills and where the job is performed.

Final, individual compensation will be decided based on demonstrated experience.
