Chair - Department of Theatre and Dance
The College of Liberal Arts at the University of Texas at El Paso is searching for an experienced and visionary leader to serve as chair of The Department of Theatre and Dance beginning Fall 2025. We seek an artist-scholar who is committed to align the department with the classification of UTEP as Research 1 university, Hispanic Serving Institution and Carnegie Community Engaged institution. The appointment will be at the level of Professor with Tenure.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Enhancing UTEP's, and the department's, R1 status through a strong focus on research, grant writing, and relevant industry work.
- Mentoring faculty and staff.
- Developing a strategic plan for branding, recruitment, and retention in collaboration with faculty, staff, and students.
- Preparation of and management of the departmental budgets.
- Coordinating department course schedules.
- Assigning duties and workload for faculty and staff in consultation with the Dean.
- Course instruction consistent with workload policies and departmental needs.
- Maintaining and securing extramural funding.
- Evaluating performance of faculty and staff and making recommendations for appointments, retention, tenure, promotions, and salary recommendations.
- Appointment of department committees and committee chairs.
- Addressing questions, complaints, grievances, and suggestions from faculty, staff, and students.
Job Requirements:
- An MFA or other terminal degree in Theatre or Dance, or other relevant arts leadership field
- Substantial prior leadership experience either in academia, the arts, or both
- A solid understanding of the artistic production process at the undergraduate training level
- Excellent communication, budgetary, organizational, and resource/time-management skills, and stakeholder engagement
- A commitment to collegiality within and outside the university
- Clear and demonstrated record of research, creative scholarship, and/or ongoing professional work nationally and internationally
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bilingual in English and Spanish
- Previous experience in a Hispanic Serving Institution
- Involvement in fundraising projects
Prior experience (1-2 years) in an Assistant Chair, Chair, or Interim Chair position or in a college or university administration position

SALARY: The initial salary is competitive, based on qualifications and experience, and comes with excellent fringe benefits.
Hiring decisions are based on budget approval.
